Description |
Diethylcarbamazine citrate is the drug of choice in the treatment of flariasis. Administration of this drug in adult dose levels for a period of twelve days (300 mg/day for twelve days is one dose schedule recommended for the treatment of flariasis) brings about a change in the distribution of lipids in laboratory rats. The change is more marked in heart followed by brain, kidney and adipose. There was only marginal variation in the level of proteins. Carbohydrates were, however, unaffected. The study suggests that great care has to be taken while recommending long term use of DEC as a cure for flariasis, especially to people with any history of heart ailment.
