Description |
Spices have played a significant role in the history of civilization, particularly that of India. Crop improvement in majority of spices is a difficult and time consuming programme due to their long pre-bearing age and due to certain crop specific problems. Biotechnology offers an avenue in crop improvement of spices. In India, biotechnology is being employed for improvement of spices crops, with emphasis on micropropagation and rapid clonal multiplication of high yielding 'elite' genotypes to generate quality planting material; exploiting somaclonal variation and genetic engineering techniques for crop improvement; in vitro selection for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses; in vitro conservation for safe exchange of germplasm and production of flavour and volatile constituents in culture. |
