Description Foot rot disease (formerly known as quick wilt) is the most destructive disease of black pepper (Piper nigrum) in India and several other pepper growing countries. It is
caused by the pathogen, Phytophthora capsici. The pathogen infects all patts of black pepper like leaf, stem, spike, collar and root. Root infection may start from feeder root system and the vine survives
in the field with reduced canopy for a few years. The root infection culminates in collar (foot) infection and the vine succumbs. The collar infected vines show
yellowing, flaccidity of leaves, defoliation, spike shedding and breaking of stem at the nodal regions. The pathogen survives in the soil on infected plant debris
throughout the year, which serves as the primary inoculum source. Disease spread is through soil, water, rain splash, root contact and contaminated materials. IISR Shakthi and IISR Thevam are moderately resistant and tolerant varieties respectively against this disease. However no resistant vatieties against this pathogen are available so far in black pepper.
