Description |
India is known as the Land of Spices. About 52 spices are grown in the country at present. Export of spices earned RS.1352 crores worth of foreign exchange to the country during 1998-99. Among the major spices, black pepper and cardamom originated in India having their centre of diversity in western Ghats. At present India is a major production centre of black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric and various seed spicesĀ· such as coriander, cumin, fennel, celery etc. India has remarkable diversity for many of these spices. This paper gives an overview of diversity of major spices, problems in their conservation and future needs. |
