Description Users can access data on emergency and hospital visits related to injuries caused by consumer products in the United States.

Background

The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS)collects data on injury prevalence related to different types of consumer products. The NEISS is maintained by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The NEISS collects information from a certain number of hospitals in a region to estimate prevalences for the entire region. Users can search the NEISS database by: Date (one year maximum range)Product (e.g., how many bicycle injuries occurred) Sex, Age, Diagno
sis, Disposition, Locale, and Body Part.

User functionality

Users can do searches for specific consumer products or injuries within a given treatment date or access NEISS data highlights. When searching, the NEISS codes different consumer products based on product codes. It is important to understand what codes apply to the date range specified in the query, as NEISS product codes change over time. Up to three product codes, or ranges of product codes, can be specified in a give
n query. Product code guides are available in PDF form on the website.

Data Notes

NEISS searchable data is available from 1/1/1991 until 12/31/2009. Neiss data highlights are available from 2007 through 2009. The website does not say when new data will be added.
