Crop productivity in the semi-arid tropics (SAT) has almost remained static over the past three decades. While potential yield of the ICRISAT mandate crops (sorghum pearl millet, pigeonpea, chickpea, and groundnut) is between 5 to 10 tons ha-1, the actual yields only range between 0.5 to 1.5 tons ha-1. The huge gap between the potential and actual yields can, for the most part, be attributed to the losses caused by insect pests and diseases (currently valued at over US$ 7.4 billion annually). Over 1,000 species of insect pests, fungal pathogens, viruses, and Striga cause damage to ICRISAT mandate crops. ICRISAT’s research in this area is focused on pest problems that are globally important, such as pod borers (Helicoverpa, Maruca, and Melanagromyza), Fusarium wilt, and sterility mosaic in pigeonpea; Helicoverpa, Wilt, Ascochyta, and Botrytis gray mold in chickpea; Rosette virus, foliar diseases, Aflatoxins, and leaf miner in groundnut; Striga, grain molds, shoot fly, stem borers, midge, and head bugs in sorghum; and downy mildew, stem borer and head miner in pearl millet. The major components of integrated pest management (IPM) research are host-plant resistance, natural plant products, bio-pesticides, natural enemies, and agronomic practices. Modern biotechnological tools such as marker assisted selection, genetic engineering, and wide hybridization are also being used to develop crop cultivars with resistance to important insect pests and diseases. IPM promotion and capacity building are also of significant importance at ICRISAT. |
