Description |
Gladiolus (Gladiolus spp.) is an ideal cut flower and also called “Queen of bulbous crops”. Gladiolus is a highly preferred bulbous ornamental plant with attractive colour and beautiful flower spike. The word Gladiolus is a derivative of the Latin word “gladius,” which means “sword.” ‘Sword lily’ or ‘Corn Flag’ are two of its more popular names. Gladiolus is a state flower of Punjab. Gladiolus has 4th rank in cut flower and 1st rank in bulbous flower in the world. Among gladiolus growing countries, India occupies 2nd rank . It is demanded in both international and national market. Assessment of genetic variability is necessary to evaluate the cultivar performance and permits estimation of coefficient of variability of polygenic traits and the effect of environment on them. Nature and magnitude of variability present in a set of germplasm helps in getting higher yield and quality production via further breeding programs. High variability helps in making het erotic F1 s especially in cross pollinated crop like gladiolus. Further, it gives an idea of heritable traits and helps in improving the desirable traits of the crop through crop breeding programs.
