Description The Cajanus cajan line ICPM1 (= MS4A; ICPP1) was derived from a single male-sterile plant from the line ICP1596-2. ICPM1 is an indeterminate, semispreading, midseason line which reaches 50% flowering in about 127 days; it produces an average of 3.3 small seeds/pod, with a 100-seed weight of 7.3 g, and yields 1.27 t/ha. Male sterility in ICMP1 is controlled by a single recessive gene, ms1, and homozygous plants can be recognized 3-4 days before anthesis by their translucent anthers. ICMP1 has been used as female parent in the production of about 50 experimental hybrids; it has also been used in backcrossing to develop male-sterile forms of various cultivars. The salient features of 13 such forms are tabulated. ICMP1 can be maintained in isolation with open or hand pollination by harvesting grains from the half of the population that is homozygously male sterile. The use of ICMP1 in hybrid seed production is outlined. It is particularly recommended for developing disease-resistant male-sterile parents.
