Description |
An experiment was carried out to find the efficacy of Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria salicornia and Sargassum sp. seaweed extract (SWE) bio stimulants as foliar sprays with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.5% and 1% each on growth and flowering of Gerbera cultivarsRosalin and Stanza in naturally ventilated greenhouse. Normally irrigated plants served as control and the treated plants received SWE foliar spray on 30th and 60th days of planting. From the results it is evident that the seaweed application of Kappaphycus alvarezii 0.5% was found beneficial for overall vegetative growth and flower quality in cv. Rosalin. The maximum plant height (31.76cm), maximum leaf length (22.61cm), earliest bud emergence (49.33 days), earliest flower opening (66.67 days), maximum stalk length (40.18 cm), maximum stalk diameter (6.61 mm) was found in Kappaphycus alvarezii 0.5% and maximum number of flowers per plant per annum (29.47) were obtained from Kappaphycus alvarezii 1%. Gracilaria salicornia 1% had the maximum number of leaves (10.78) while maximum capitulum diameter (8.71) was found in Gracilaria salicornia 0.5%. In cv. Stanza although maximum plant height(30.94 cm), earliest flower opening (60.98 days) and maximum stalk diameter (7.78 mm) was found in Sargassum sps 1% the overall best performance in vegetative growth and flowering accounted for Gracilaria salicornia 1%. The plants treated with Gracilaria salicornia 1% had the maximum number of leaves (10.68), earliest bud emergence (43.03 days), maximum stalk length (45.71 cm), maximum capitulum diameter (10.02 cm) and maximum number of flowers per plant per year (31.18).
