Potato being shallow rooted crop has relatively high demand for many nutrients and irrigation as the supply of nutrients and water from the soil alone is often not adequate to meet the crop demands for growth. Best yields can be obtained with optimum management of both nutrients and water. Hence, ensuring a sufficient supply of nutrients and maintaining optimum moisture is crucial. The crop is sensitive to moisture stress and most of the studies have indicated stolen initiation followed by tuberization as the most critical stages for potato. Soil moisture monitoring tools like tensiometers and cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) based irrigation scheduling help in economizing the water use. Adopting micro-irrigation can save 40-50% irrigation water.
