Description |
Peanut stripe virus disease of groundnut has spread rapidly in many groundnut-producing countries, and causes economically significant crop losses. Groundnuts are an important oilseeds crop in many regions of the developing wor ld, as well as a major protein source. Plant quarantine strategies are a critical factor in containing this seed-transmitted virus because plant breeders frequently exchange germplasm, often between countries. In this publication, scientists review research and the country-specific situation of peanut stripe disease in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, and the USA. In addition, the Peanut Collaborative Research Support Program (Peanut CRSP), USA, and a microcomputer virus data base are described. Six technical papers cover seed-borne legume viruses, control of tropical legume viruses, comparison of peanut stripe virus isolates, purification and serological relationships of peanut stripe virus, the molecular basis for potyvirus serology, and use of high-performance liquid chromatographic peptide profiling of coat protein digests. Recommendations are made for further action to control the spread of this disease, to estimate crop losses, and to formulate management strategies. |
