Description A roving survey was conducted on the incidence of rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzae in Chittoor, Nellore and Y.S.R Districts of Southern zone of Andhra Pradesh. In the three districts, mainly BPT-5204, NDLR- 7, NDLR-34449, NDLR-4001, ADT-37, JGL-384 and RNR-15048 varieties are cultivated. Sporadic occurrence of rice gall midge was observed during 2014, 2015 and 2016 in Southern zone Districts of Andhra Pradesh. Later on, it became a regular pest, playing a significant role in reducing rice production. Lack of resistant or tolerant varieties under cultivation, congenial weather conditions led to outbreak of rice gall midge during 2019 and 2020. The objective was to assess the incidence of rice gall midge in the major rice cultivation areas of all three Districts. The survey encompassed various stages of the rice crop, observation on the occurrence of gall midge, varieties grown, and the farming practices employed by the farmers. The extent of silver shoot damage and overall plant damage were calculated. Among the surveyed Districts, Nellore District exhibited the highest gall midge infestation, with a mean silver shoot damage of 15.38 per cent followed by Y.S.R. District with 12.19 per cent and lowest was noticed in Chittoor District with 4.50 per cent. As gall midge is an endemic pest, the most economically viable and feasible approach for its management is through the cultivation of resistant varieties
