Description This study used double-bounded dichotomous-choice model to estimate and analyse the factors affecting households’ willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainable use cum conservation of forestry of the UNESCO Heritage Indian Sundarbans. Sundarbans is not only the home of numerous species of mangroves that protect the biodiversity but also the attraction of millions of tourists because of its rich aesthetic value and for being the homeland to the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Along with these, this forestry is the source of livelihood to the millions of people who live here. This study notes that although the households living in the two districts of Sundarbans of West Bengal are very poor financially, majority of them have willingness to accept the higher bid in the double-bounded bidding process. It shows the importance as well as necessity of the forestry, as a whole, to them, which could solve manifold problems. Pilot survey as well as final survey were conducted in the two districts of Indian Sundarbans of West Bengal on 600 households and bids were set in such a manner which could be affordable for the people of these areas. Over 85% were willing to contribute from their pockets for the improvement and sustainable use of the forestry and its eco-system. Very poor socio -economic conditions played the role behind unwillingness of less than 15% respondents. We focussed on taking care of the randomness during survey as well as in explaining the proposed changes by following the recommendations of NOAA panel in application of CVM. Our study reveals that whether or not a respondent would agree to contribute that depends upon several socio-economic- demographic aspects, apart from the bid amounts. We have found significantly good amount as average willingness to contribute to the conservation of mangrove forestry of Indian Sunderbans – a phenomenon that explains the existence of awareness about sustainable uses of forestry among the people for the sake of both present and future generations.
