Description Bamboo is an eco-friendly grass and is considered beneficial for the environment, generating livelihood and providing food and fodder. Bamboo seed, commonly known as Bamboo rice, is eaten globally in different forms amongst the tribal communities. Bamboo seed provides as an alternative food resource to marginalized and poor communities in many disadvantageous regions, and thus helps in ensuring food and nutritional security. In the present study, seeds of two bamboo species viz.Dendrocalamus strictus and Bambusa bambos were selected for their nutritional composition and antioxidant activity. Results indicated that the D. strictus and B.bambos seeds are a good source of nutrition containing protein and starch comparable to that of rice. The fiber fractions of the seeds showed that it has more hemicelluloses (49.9% and 42.9%) content than cellulose (6.1% and 4.3%) for D. strictus and B. bambos respectively. It also shows moderate antioxidant properties as it contains phenols (23.6 and 18.3 mgGAE/g) and flavanoids (2.6 and 1.3 mg quercitin/g) and possesses antioxidant activity (29.4 and 21.8%) for D. strictus and B. bambos respectively. The potential of bamboo seed remains unexplored and extensive research needs to be attempted. More research focusing on the correlation of the antioxidant properties of the seeds and prevention of various lifestyle diseases in humans are urgently required. Bamboo seeds can not only support the marginal communities with food and nutritional security combating problems of malnutrition but can also open new avenues for income generation to the tribal people strengthening skill developmentĀ
