Description  Key messages:

Agroforestry, the practice of growing trees alongside crops, covered 8.2% of India's land in 2013, providing significant benefits such as timber, improved land productivity, soil conservation, climate moderation, and increased farmer income. However, its broader adoption faced challenges due to technical, regulatory, and financial barriers, and the absence of a clear policy.
In response, a National Agroforestry Policy (NAP) was developed with extensive input from ICRAF (World Agroforestry Centre), the Ministry of Agriculture, and other stakeholders. Launched in 2014, the policy addressed regulatory issues, facilitating easier tree felling and transportation on agricultural lands. It also led to the creation of an agroforestry mission with a USD 146 million budget, promoting state-level agroforestry programs and simplifying practices for farmers.
ICRAF’s effective contribution to the policy development process can be credited to its strong collaborative and partnership approach with relevant national institutions.
The NAP played a pivotal role in upgrading the National Research Centre in Agroforestry (NRCAF) to the Central Agroforestry Research Institute (CAFRI), enhancing research and innovation. From 2011 to 2021 and increase of India's tree cover by 4,904 square kilometres, expanding agroforestry to 8.65% of the country's area by 2023.

ICRAF and CAFRI provided extensive training and resources, including for women, to support policy implementation. Internationally, ICRAF's involvement in India's policy has influenced agroforestry initiatives in ASEAN countries, Nepal, Rwanda, Gambia, Maldives, Ethiopia, and Kenya, promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation globally
