Description Sustainable agricultural practices are essential in order to conserve the natural resource base while improving productivity. Thirty three delegates from 11 countries in southern and eastern Africa (including South Africa), and from ICRISAT and the Southern African Centre for Cooperation in Agriculture and Natural Resources Research and Training (SACCAR), participated in this Workshop. Recent research on groundnut was reviewed, through presentations that discussed the role of four broad disciplines—genetic enhancement, crop protection, agronomy, and technology transfer—in sustainable groundnut production. The Workshop recommendations are summarized; priority areas include characterization of drought-prone environments, establishment of drought nurseries, surveys on pests, diseases, and aflatoxin contamination, on-farm trials, and more effective technology transfer.
