Description Functional and healthy seed is one of the important factors in improving agricultural production. Farmer-based seed production programs for pearl millet and sorghum have been introduced in some of the developing countries(Senegal and Namibia) and are proving to be successful. The areas of responsibility interms of producing improved cultivars(pure-line varieties, coposites, and hybrids) are breeding, commercial seed production, and certification. While breeding is carried out by a research station, commercial production and distribution require an well-organized operation. Certification is carried out by independent agencies that monitor the quality and purity of the cultivar during production. The procedures for seed production of the open-pollinated varieties differ from those of hybrids. There are also differences in the seed production of both sorghum and pearl millet. Maintaining varietal purity of both the crops requires adequate precautions that need to be taken against physical and mixtures durings owing, harvesting, threshing, and storage. Both pearl millet and sorghum have specific requirements for protection against contaimanation so that good quality seed can be produced.
