Description |
Traditional rice varieties are gaining popularity because of their therapeutic and medicinal benefits. These varieties are used in breeding programmes for introducing useful traits in modern HYVs. Seed storage is one of the important criteria in varietal development, hence, an experiment was conducted to assess the storage potential of some important traditional rice varieties in the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India for the period of two years during 2020-22. Among 12 varieties studied, Kallundrikar, Kuruvai kalangium, Karunkuruvai and Vaasanai seeraga samba performed well in storage and recorded more than 80 per cent germination even after 18 months of storage under ambient conditions. Vigour potential was also maintained better in these varieties.
