Description |
The performance of 18 S2 and S3 progenies derived from single pot screening of a limited number of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) seedlings was evaluated in a field experiment conducted in Andhra Pradesh, India to determine whether downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola) screening of a limited number of seedlings would be effective for the mass evaluation of a large number of progenies in a breeding program, and whether within progeny selection would be effective in improving the downy mildew resistance in the crop to acceptable levels. Downy mildew in the S2 progenies ranged from 10-57% during the first screening and from 0 to 68% in the second screening. A significant difference between the selected and unselected lines in 6 S3 progenies was recorded, with the DM incidence levels in the selected lines reduced from half to one-third in the unselected lines. The downy mildew incidence in the 6 selected progenies varied from 14 to 46%, indicating that one-stage selection during the inbreeding process was not effective in improving the resistance of the crop to acceptable levels.
