Description |
In 1994, a male-fertile Pennisetum glaucum hybrid from crosses between 81A4 and 834B, with excellent pollen shedding and selfed seed set, was observed in a testcross nursery at Patancheru. The inheritance of fertility restoration in this cross was investigated. Six F1 plants were selfed to produce F2 progenies, and were backcrossed to 81A4 to produce BC1 progenies. About 200-240 F2 and 100-150 BC1 plants were evaluated for pollen shedding. Those which shed pollen were classified as male fertile (F) and those that did not were classified as male sterile (S). The aggregate segregation ratio in the F2 did not fit a 3F:1S ratio and the segregation pattern across the 6 progenies was heterogeneous. Half of the progenies gave a good fit to the 3:1 ratio and the other 3 did not, with an excess of sterile plants. The aggregate segregation ratio in the BC1 fitted a 1:1 ratio and segregation across the 6 progenies was homogeneous. It is suggested that 834B carries a single dominant gene for male fertility restoration of the A4 CMS system.
