Description |
The F2 populations of 46 single crosses among desi parents of long, medium and short duration were used as a source of lines for selection for yield. The 5 F2-derived F6 lines selected were entered in a trial of 60 medium duration entries in the International Chickpea Screening Nursery in 1984-85, involving 8 Indian sites; they ranked 1st, 4th, 7th, 17th and 54th, respectively. It is suggested that this breeding procedure is useful as a source of heterogeneous, and thus stable, lines, and in providing a large amount of material in the F2 and F3, allowing multilocational tests at the early stages of breeding.
