Description |
Twenty-eight interspecific crosses between 8 elite C. arietinum genotypes as females and 6 accessions of 5 wild Cicer spp. as male parents were attempted during the 1988-89 and 1989-90 growing seasons. Work was conducted in a greenhouse with exogenous application of hormone solution (containing 87.5 mg gibberellic acid + 25 mg NAA + 5 mg kinetin/litre) soon after pollination. Seeds were only obtained from crosses between C. arietinum genotypes ICCV6, Annigeri and PRR1 and wild C. echinospermum, and were subsequently sown in pots and gave germination levels of 100, 80 and 67%, respectively. The F1 plants differed in morphoagronomic traits from the parents indicating true hybridity. A difference in seed characteristics indicated heterogeneity in one of the parents.
