Description Three high-tillering male-sterile Pennisetum glaucum lines (the recently developed dwarf type ICMA89111 (d2) and 5054A and 3383A) were each pollinated with 2 high-, 2 medium- and 2 low-tillering lines. Parents and hybrids were evaluated during the post-rainy season of 1990 in a vertisol and an alfisol at Patancheru and Hisar, Andhra Pradesh. Data on 6 yield components (tabulated) indicate that pollinators with sturdy stems and erect growth habit should be used to breed hybrids on these male-sterile lines. ICMA89111, with a yield of 2.10 t/ha, gave at least 60% higher grain yield, 66% greater seed weight, 22% more effective tillers/plant and was 5 days later in flowering than the other 2 male-sterile lines. Hybrids from ICMA89111 were the best performers (yields from crosses with high-, medium- and low-tillering pollinators were 2.59, 3.23 and 2.95 t/ha, respectively). In a second investigation, the incidence of downy mildew (Sclerospora graminicola) in greenhouse and nursery studies was evaluated in the 3 high-tillering male-sterile lines using a seedling inoculation test. ICMA89111 and 5054A had the lowest incidence of downy mildew (4.6% and 15.5%, respectively).
