Description |
Past work and strategies to tackle unsolved disease problems are reviewed. After short sections on (1) sources of genetic variability and (2) breeding techniques, approaches to problems caused by Fusarium oxysporum, Verticillium albo-atrum, Macrophomina phaseolina, other stem and root rots, Ascochyta rabiei, Botrytis cinerea and other foliar fungal diseases are surveyed. Viral diseases are noted briefly and nematodes, including Meloidogyne species, Heterodera ciceri and Pratylenchus species, are mentioned. These are followed by sections on: breeding for multiple disease resistance; annual wild Cicer species as a potential source of genes for resistance; and resistant cultivars in disease management
