Description |
Seedlings of parental, F1, F2 and backcross generations of 8 pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan] crosses (6 between susceptible and resistant genotypes, and 2 between susceptible parents) were screened against isolate P3 of Phytophthora drechsleri f.sp. cajani in a greenhouse trial. Estimates of genetic variance components, heterosis and inbreeding depression were calculated. Results indicated the monogenic dominant nature of resistance and the presence of some minor genes involved in resistance expression. Heritability estimates were generally high and environmental variance was low. Breeding schemes to fully utilize this durable source of dominant resistance (pd3) in pigeon pea are discussed.
