Description The wheats (Triticum spp.) belong to the Poaceae, the
largest family within the monocotyledonous plants.
Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) is one
of the most important cereal grain crops of the
world and is cultivated over a wide range of climatic
conditions. Global production of bread wheat
in 2003 was 557 Mt, with an average yield of 2.68 t/ha
(http://apps.fao.org/).Theworld’smajor breadwheatproducing
areas are in northern China, northern India,
northern USA and adjoining areas in Canada,
northern and central Europe, western Russia, southern
Australia, southern Latin America and South
Africa. Worldwide, wheat provides nearly 55% of the
carbohydrate and 20% of the food calories consumed
globally (Breiman and Graur 1995).
