Description Preservation of the world's biodiversity of plant species depends on the collecting strategy utilized, particularly the sampling size and sampling method applied. Following a discussion of these two criteria the authors recommend that seed samples need not be taken from more than 100 cross-pollinating plants but for self-pollinating plants the number sampled may vary from 25 to 500 depending on the expected variation. They also suggest that sampling time can be reduced in fields where the plant stand is uniform by spot sampling rather than by transection unless selective sampling is required when the sampler would have to search for specific types.
