Subject Groundnut

Description Groundnut production in Africa, South and Southeast Asia are described, as well as the yield losses due to drought. The 3 genetic enhancement approaches developed at ICRISAT (India) and implemented simultaneously to enhance the adaptation of groundnut to drought-prone environments are enumerated: (1) development of short-duration genotypes that can escape the end-of-season drought, (2) development of genotypes with superior yield performance in drought-prone regions following conventional breeding approaches, and (3) development of drought-resistant genotypes following physiological breeding approach. Prospects of marker-assisted selection are highlighted. Three approaches that can lead to increased soil moisture availability to the plant, are discussed, i.e. (a) matching crop phenology to environment, (b) optimal use of supplementary irrigation, if available, and (c) increasing soil available water to crop.
