Description Eleven morphological traits were evaluated in 15 dwarf and non-dwarf inbred lines of Pennisetum glaucum grown during summer (E1) and rainy (E2) growing seasons in 1994. Significant diversity was observed in the 10 inbred lines and 5 controls. Inter-cluster and intra-cluster distances, calculated using Mahalanobis' D² statistic, grouped the lines into 4 clusters (E1 and E2), as well as across (pooled over) environments. The grouping was fairly consistent and largely independent of environmental influence. Traits that contributed most to divergence were time to 50% stigma emergence, panicle length, number of effective tillers, leaf blade width and 1000-grain weight. ICMP 85410, ICMP 91205, ICMP 83503 and ICMP 89024 were selected as a set of elite inbred lines for intercrossing, as they were clustered in different groups.
