Description The assumption of N. S. Bhatterjee that Heliothis armigera is divided into 3 subspecies, which feed on cotton and bhindi [okra], on sorghum, maize and wheat, and on gram [Cicer arietinum] and tomato, respectively, and of which the males have 11, 12 and 13 aedeagal cornutal spines, respectively, was investigated by rearing laboratory populations of field-collected larvae taken on sorghum, gram and pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan] on these 3 groups of food-plants. The number of spines was found to vary from 10 to 15 in laboratory-reared and field-collected males of all the food-plant groups. It was therefore impossible to link spine numbers with food-plant type in determining subspecies of H. armigera. Other Heliothis species collected at the same time from Andhra Pradesh included H. peltigera and H. assulta.
