Description |
Nitrogen is a major factor limiting the production of cereals. The availability of this element depends on the turnover rate of the" nitrogen cycle and the return of the nitrogen to the soil through biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) or by fertiliser application. Estimates of nitrogen fixation associated with cereals and grasses are not very precise, but the results indicate that nitrogen fixation in non-legumes, occurs at levels which can be measured. Reliable estimates can be obtained from more difficult nitrogen balance studies which need· to be continued for several years in the field. This review covers the present knowledge about the nature of the association between plant and nitrogen-fixh1g bacteria, types ()r bacteria involved and methods of isolation and· screening. |
