Description |
NCD2 (PI583797), a d2 dwarf population of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) released in 1994, was derived from the Nigerian Composite (NC) via a programme of limited backcrossing involving GAM73, a d2 dwarf (1 m in height) population from Senegal. NC was developed at Samaru, Nigeria by random-mating 200 S4 progenies derived from landraces of Nigeria and other western African countries. In a yield trial conducted at Patancheru and Bhavanisagar, India in 1982 and 1984, NCD2 gave mean grain yields of 2.86 t/ha, 19% more than NC and 33% more than GAM73. Mean plant height of NCD2 was 1.2 m, and it took 51 days to 50% flowering. The 1000-grain weights of NCD2, NC and GAM73 averaged 7.3, 7.8 and 7.0 g, respectively. NCD2 has a high level of resistance to Sclerospora graminicola. Testcrosses to the cytoplasmically male sterile line 81Am indicated that NCD2 could prove a useful source of restorers and maintainers of the Am cytoplasm.
