Abstract/Description: | Farmers are obtaining agricultural information through various media of which mobile services has gained momentum during the recent years, as information technology made mobiles available for every individual. Mobile message services are used to answer queries in agriculture by receiving the queries as SMS from the user in a specific format and responding to them. In order to enrich and equip the farmers on oil palm technology, mobile message services were used. Database of registered oil palm growers was obtained and software was developed to provide the mobile services to the growers. Content on oil palm that was developed as short messages in English and other vernacular languages was stored in the database. The specific content retrieved was published as text and voice SMS to the unique mobile and land line data and the receipt / delivery status of the message were recorded. User friendly screens were developed for updating and retrieving the information. So far 54 text SMS were sent to 3.12 lakh mobile numbers with a delivery percentage of 81%. A total of 40 voice messages were published to 3.71 lakh mobile / landline numbers of which the delivery percentage is 42.75. |
