Abstract/Description: | CONTEXT Use of antimicrobial drugs in animals is essential for their good health and productivity, which in turn will ensure better food security, food safety and animal welfare. In the recent past there has been growing concern about antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which threatens to reverse these benefits. Resistance, arising in one geographical location or species can easily spread to other geographical locations or spill over into other species, and thus impact both developed and developing countries. The subject of antimicrobial resistance has not received adequate focus and attention in South Asia, including India. Surprisingly, very little is known about the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry. At present AMR is a global concern and immediate attention is called for to address it. Attention has to be focused on optimum use of antimicrobials with regard to the prescribed guidelines and action plans. |
