| Abstract/Description: | Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii Bolus ex Hooker f.), is a perennial herb which belongs to family Asteraceae and also known as Transvaal or African daisy. It occupies 4th position among the cut flowers owing to its wide range of bewitching colours, forms and attractive geometrical shape. The flower stalks are long, thin and leafless. The cut flowers are hardy, have long vase-life and can withstand long transportation. It is suitable for wide range of floral arrangements and also used for beds, borders, pot culture and rock gardens. It is grown throughout the world in a wide range of agro-climatic conditions. The temperate region of Kashmir Himalaya has very good potential for commercial cut flowers production attributable to its favourable climate during summers and proximity to Delhi and Chandigarh market. The protected cultivation of cut flowers is highly beneficial owing to high yield, better quality and enhanced flowering duration. |
