Abstract/Description: | Alpha-1-fucosyltransferase gene (FUT1), controlling ETEC-F18 receptor expression, influences E. coli susceptibility responsible for oedema disease and post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) in piglets and Leptin gene (LEP), with its wide spectrum of influence on various carcass and reproductive traits, are of prime interest as candidate markers for economic and profitable pork production. In the present experiment, polymorphism at FUT1-M307 locus and LEP exon 3 was studied in indigenous pigs using PCR-RFLP. Further, association of LEP variants with economic traits like litter size and weight at birth and weaning (LSB, LWB, LSW, LWW) was carried out. The studied population revealed absence of FUT1 AA genotype (resistant). Animals with LEP CC genotype were found superior for the traits studied. Results of the present study suggests genetic predisposition of indigenous pigs to developing PWD. Further, large-scale association studies are suggested to validate the observed superior performance of LEP CC genotype. |
