Abstract/Description: | VK Singh and 5 C Alehta. heep play a major role in agrarian economy. The sheep population of the country has registered a slow but steady growth during the half century. It has increased from 38.96 million in the year 1951 to 50.7 million in the year 1992 with an annual growth of 0.75%. The wool production has also increased from 27.5 million kg to about 43.2 million kg with an-annual growth of about 1.42% for the same period. This clearly indicates that the productivity of wool has increased. This increase in wool production has mainly been registered in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The State-wise wool production figures from the year 1985-86 to 1996-97 of major wool producing States of the country have been presented in Table 1.
