| Abstract/Description: | Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) is a devastating viral disease of cassava and a major threat to food security in Africa. Cassava brown streak viruses (CBSVs) are known to cause CBSD and these are taxonomically recognized as two different viral species, Cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) and Ugandan cassava brown streak virus (UCBSV). CBSVs belong the genus ipomovirus in the family Potyviridae, encoding for a polyprotein which is subsequently processed into 10 individual proteins. Unlike potyviruses, CBSVs lack the typical HCPro gene, but have an additional gene called as HAM1h. CBSVs are transmitted semi-persistently by the whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci and its mechanical spread is mainly through cultivation of infected stem cuttings. |
