Response of Solanaceous Vegetables to Increasing Temperature and Atmospheric CO2

Abstract

The climate change has made its strong footprint in the world to the scientific consensus. The foremost reason for this havoc is the emission of greenhouse gases mainly through the anthropogenic (human-caused) activities (Cook et al. 2016). The climate system is on the verge of facing a long-term irreversible impact in all of its components. Global warming, certainly, is one of the serious threats to our ecosystems (IPCC 2014). There will be further warming of the globe with the continued greenhouse gas emissions. The last few decades have witnessed a slow but steady escalation in the global temperature (Fig. 1) as well as atmospheric CO2 concentrations . In this chapter, the consequences of rising temperature and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) on plants in general and Solanaceous vegetables in particular are elaborately discussed
