Abstract/Description: | Two hundred and forty eight accessions from the National Active Germplasm Site for mango belonging to North, South and West region of India were analyzed for the following characteristics: leaf length, leaf width, weight of fruit, fruit length, fruit breadth, fruit thickness, fruit length and width ratio, pulp weight, pulp content, stone weight, peel weight, TSS, stone length, stone width, stone thickness, based on their region of origin. The analysis of variance by diverse geographical regions resulted in significant differences among the regional means for the characters of leaf width, fruit length and width ratio (FRLWR) and stone length (P=0.05). North Indian accessions were superior for yield as well as quality attributes. Fruit weight in North Indian accession showed higher range from 57 to 1250 g with highest values of standard deviation (160.49) and variance (25755.80) followed by pulp weight ranging from 20 to 980 g with values of 126.71 and 16055.40 for standard deviation and variance, respectively. Qualitative characters, i.e., yield potential, fruit shape, skin toughness and adhesiveness to pulp and stone body exhibited considerable variation in relative frequency on their rating scale with regard to their adoption in different growing regions. The study reveals the association of various fruit characteristics with the region of their adoption. |
