Abstract/Description: | African Swine Fever (ASF) was first described 100 years ago (Penrith et al., 2021). It is a highly infectious and fatal disease of pigs, endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa, and has spread to many locations in Europe and Asia (Leray & Ward, 2021; Mighell & Ward, 2021; Sanchez-Cordon et al., 2018). The World Organization for Animal Health (Office Inter- national des Épizooties, OIE) has reported the death of 8.20 million pigs between 2016 and 2020, with 82% of the global cases reported from Asia (World Organization for Animal Health, 2021). ASF, with no vaccines or cure available and often with almost 100% mortality, has resulted in both economic losses (Berthe, 2020) and disruption of the food chain in several countries (Mason-D’Croz et al., 2020). The North- Eastern (NE) region of India, consisting of eight states, rears 47% of the Indian pig population, and shares a border with several countries— China, Myanmar, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Pig rearing, a key source of income and dietary protein, is intricately associated with the socio- cultural fabric of the people of NE India. |
