Abstract/Description: | In the present context of purse seining on commercial scale, an economic assessment of it is all the more important for the present and future exploitation. Pelagic fishery is most important along the south west coast of India. Purse seining is not only expensive and highly efficient but can even be detrimental to the standing stock and the artisanal fishing as well, and has therefore to be introduced on a artisanal fishing and the standing stock are discussed in this paper in detail. A method of purse- seining by artisanal fishermen employing their traditional craft is also discussed. it is also suggested that both artisanal and mechanised purse seining can go simultaneously if proper checks are made. |
