dc.description.abstract | Saffron (Crocus sativus L.), a most expensive spice in the world, values for its golden-colored, pungent stigmas. It contains crocin, picrocrocin and saffranal which are very important ingredients in food, medicinal and pharmaceutical industries as colouring, flavouring and therapeutic agents. It is a legendry crop of Jammu and Kashmir produced on Karewa’s of Pulwama, Srinagar, Budgam, Kishtwar, Doda and Udhampur districts of J&K. To improve production and productivity, the Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (ICAR), developed cost effective intensive production technology involving micro irrigation, integrated nutrient and corm rot management resulted in significant improvement in saffron yield (7-8 kg/ha) as compared to national average of 2.5 kg/ha. This technology has been successfully demonstrated at farmer’s field and is becoming popular among saffron growers. | en_US |
