Agricultural Research Policy for Food Security & Sustainability in India

Abstract

Agricultural research is the driver to pull the economy of any country out of hunger and poverty and leads to the path of socio-economic equity and prosperity. However, research focus and components are varied across the globe. The major underlying reason for this is region-specific research demands based on food requirement and its delivery system and economic-political structure. The chapter will indulge describing the broader picture of agricultural research in India and relevant research policies on sustainable agriculture and food security. The challenges in Indian agriculture, current as well as emerging where targeted research is the felt need, is discussed in the latter part of the chapter. Sustainability aspirations and public-private research development and investment are also addressed. Overall, it is proposed to provide the full overview of the current status of agricultural research in India and future research policies and strategies needed to leap forward in agricultural production and economy
